30th Birthday in Toronto = Excellent

Bobby and I just had a great dinner at the Green Eggplant Restaurant on Queen Street East – with the Hawks game in the background. ;) Nice atmosphere, great service, great food – I highly recommend it for anyone going to the “Beach”.

Designing for the Web by Mark Boulton

I just got done reading Chapter 25: Bringing it all together of an online book Designing for the Web by Mark Boulton online and realized the main reason I woke up this morning and went directly to the computer was in fact not to start reading an online book, it was to figure out what I want for myself and my future.  Fortunately this book really inspired me and helped me think through a lot of the things that were on my mind.

Typically I wont be found reading much and that’s somewhere I could hugely improve my life and learn a lot.  My favorite sections of this book were the sections about Ideas, Design Process, and Creative Briefs.  The whole book is a really concise, intelligent, and most importantly an enjoyable read! ;) Scan a couple of those sections I highlighted or buy the book for more traditional reading tendencies — in a comfy chair with your reading light.  Highly recommended!

Twisted Up

So, I tried as much as possible to relax and just hang out and make some art this weekend, but the wedding is 19 days away! I cannot believe it and the stress is building up like crazy – not because I should be stressed, but because I am a naturally anxiety-riddled person.  I am trying to take some new vitamins called SAM-e to help me feel calm, but I’m not sure if its working or not. Hmmmm….I heard it takes almost a month to work, so I’ll probably just have to wait and see.  Anyway, I just wanted to show you guys some new artwork I made over the weekend – I’m pretty stoked about it. :) Let me know which ones are your faves…

Lightopia Online – Website Design

The Lightopia Online site is a very modern e-commerce design paired with major focus on search-ability.  The idea was to let the user search the large product line by style, type, or brand and follow a preferred path to the perfect lighting piece for their home, office, or venue. Focusing on high-quality materials, great craftsmanship, and honest service – the design decisions came together beautifully.

Features include: Dynamic Flash Animation, e-Commerce Interface + Checkout Process (with product options, user reviews, wish lists, send-to-a-friend feature, featured products), Advanced Filter Search Function, Contact Form with Google Map Integration, & Mighty-Site Content Management Software.

HL Sourcing Design

It was great working with Henry-Lee & Company on the HL Sourcing website design at Orbit.  We brainstormed for awhile and came up with this great slide show feature on the homepage to showcase all of their services and capabilities in materials.  I think everybody was very pleased with the outcome of this site – a successful project in style and function. :)

Little City Center for the Arts

Little City Center for the Arts Web Design

This is Little City Center for the Arts‘ new website that I designed at Orbit recently. I am so happy with the way it turned out. My favorite part about this project is that I love the organization – for more than 20 years, they have provided children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to explore and expand their unique and creative talents, promoting a sense of accomplishment and empowerment through the arts. ShopFixture.com

Design show and tell time. :) This is a website design I made for shopfixture.com here at Orbit in the last year.  My favorite part about this project is that I love the ShopFixture style – that’s always a bonus when designing a new site. :) Continue Reading →

Adventure Stage @ Vittum Theater

adventurestage.org

I don’t usually post about my design work so I thought I’d start doing so since Justin inspired me to do so.  This is a website I designed for Adventure Stage Chicago a dynamic theatre group in my neighborhood for young audiences.  They were built upon imagination, inspiring dialogue and growing a community of families, educators and artists.  They have workshops, residencies and resources that offer concrete ways to infuse theatre in the classroom – which I think is a great thing for young people. Aug 2nd – Polaroid Show

If anybody is interested – I’m going to “death + extinction: a polaroid exhibition” in chicago.  It’s opening night is august 2 from 6—10pm. Its shaping up to be an amazing show with 6 very talented artists from new york and 6 very talented artists from chicago. Also check out Nicole Kenneys and KS Rives’ personal project, Before i die i want to…, which is online at www.beforeidieiwantto.org. (be sure to scroll right). They will be exhibiting all the portraits from that project, and are excited to announce a softcover book will be available that includes about 115 of the photographs. There will also be work by Chicago artists Mike Nourse, Ariel Sundel, Anthony R. Vizzari, Ryan VanAcker and Amber Meairs.

Who’s coming with me? :)

Scene 360 – Featured “Goodie” :)

scene 360 dot comToday Scene 360 featured my video “It’s All Under Control” from my MFA on their online magazine.  Here’s what they wrote:

“Jul 01, 2008 -  Posted by Scene360 Team, 360’s Video Selection: “It’s All Under Control” by Shellie Fiocca. This is an interesting video that captures the painting technique and process of the artist. The background music was certainly well chosen for the footage. You can view video on our front page or video channel.”

I am one of the “Extra Goodies” at the bottom of the page.  Pretty cool.  They are an online film and arts magazine. A quarterly publication, which profiles and interviews artists, web designers, filmmakers and poets with a focus on their career and analysis of the driving forces behind their work.
