Great Reel

Samm Hodges/Mothlight Design Reel ’09 from samm hodges on Vimeo.

Just found this on vimeo and I was super impressed and inspired…so I wanted to share.  The sound and animation (as well as all the pieces) make such a great compilation.

Replenishing Body Kiosk – London Design Museum

Bobby and I went to the Design Museum today in London…in South Bank (near the Tower Bridge) and it was so awesome…wayyy better than the Tate Modern. :)

This design work was created by Ross Phillips, head of interactive at SHOWstudio, the online fashion broadcasting company, founded by Nick Knight.

It was inspired by the fact that the human body is made up of 60% water, used a 25 section, touch screen video grid where visitors were invited to make a one-second video recording of a close-up section of their body, which was added to a constantly moving, composite video portrait.

Do Not Become Comfortable

These animations are the result of an intimate relationship with the Wacom tablet and Flash 8…frame by frame animation…gotta love it. My inspiration was the distortion of emotion and intention that comes into play when reading and writing email.

The premise was to create reactionary interviews from unfiltered story telling – based on a set of rules. So I set up a camera and asked people to speak in stream of consciousness based on a phrase or sentence I gave them in the beginning. Then afterward I took these stories and cut the video into distorted sequences that, in the end, showcased a third-level dialogue that had never been spoken.

The animation on top of each story was my imposition on that person’s character, a way of de-facing a particular figure for a dialogue that is much more personal.  I made them my own.

Animated Series 2005

This is a series of flash animations I completed while experimenting during my MFA classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  Each short section includes an artistic transformation as well as a statement.

It’s All Under Control

This video is part of my thesis work regarding concepts like consumer censorship and distorted messaging in advertising.

Title: It’s All Under Control
Media: Mixed Media (Print, Paint, Pen, Then Mini DV Footage) Quicktime Movie, Length: 3:36
Producer: Shellie Fiocca
Music: Bloc Party “Pioneers” (Album: Silent Alarm)

Just Put Back the Car Keys

Excerpt from song: “Sadly things happen that we cannot explain. Just put back your car keys. I need you now.”

This was one of my first ever attempts at capturing my artistic process on video.  As you can see its pretty pixelated and I plan to replace this one when I find the original digital file.
